Our Vision

Education and Innovation

Drawing on the inheritance of the original Missionary College of St Augustine Canterbury, St Augustine’s Foundation was formed by a Royal Charter in 1979.

Its purpose has been to enable the training in ministry and in mission of men and women ‘serving, or wishing to serve, in the Ministries of the Churches of the Anglican Communion’. Over the last forty years, the Foundation has supported numerous theological education institutions, as well as individuals in theological study.

“Working in partnership with the many Provinces of the Anglican Communion, our aim is to support innovation in theological education and to nurture the gifts and talents of a future generation of theological educators and church leaders.”

The Foundation provides:

  • Scholarships for suitable candidates from Latin America, Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific to undertake doctoral research in order to support theological education in the Majority World.

  • We also resource a number of Fellowships each year for church leaders and theological educators. The award of a Fellowship may support the professional development of a church leader in the Majority World, or provide support for a theological educator from one Province to spend time teaching at a training institution in another Province. A Fellow might use the funding available to undertake a further degree or a sabbatical or a writing project.

  • Our Innovation Fund also supports many strategic projects in theological education institutions, provinces and dioceses in order to enhance their theological resources and to stimulate and encourage innovation in teaching and learning.

  • The Foundation also supports the work of the Archbishop of Canterbury by sponsoring the St Augustine Seminar, which provides a forum for theologians and biblical scholars preparing for the Lambeth Conference. For many years, we have supported the courses for new Bishops at Canterbury Cathedral.

In our commitment to education and innovation, we seek to respond faithfully to the gospel of Jesus Christ and ‘to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ’ (Ephesians 4.12-13).

We commend our work to your prayers:

Almighty and everlasting God,

by whose Spirit the whole body of the Church is governed and sanctified: hear our prayer which we offer for all your faithful people,

that in their vocation and ministry they may serve you in holiness and truth to the glory of your name;

through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Amen.
